"Helping Physicians Provide Exceptional Patient Care"

Master the Cutting-Edge New Paradigm of Health Care
(Not “Disease Care”) That Brings You Higher Earnings and Unsurpassed Patient Satisfaction

If you're tired of feeling inadequate in the face of patients in despair from poorly diagnosed illnesses, or if you're just plain tired from working day and night to relieve your patients of suffering and pain, Functional Medicine may be the answer.

This 21st-century diagnosis and treatment system considers the whole patient and complements many kinds of existing medical practices.  Functional Medicine gives you a way to uncover, scientifically, what actually lies at the root of a patient's problems.  It tells you precisely what the patient needs in order to achieve a restoration of their health – not just temporary respite from their symptoms.

Equip yourself to help patients burdened with hard-to-heal chronic conditions like arthritis, digestive problems, fatigue, insomnia, inflammation, stress, depression and recurring pain.  Become able to “crack the code” of mysterious ailments that have resisted other practitioners' efforts.

Use the additional income stream from incorporating Functional Medicine into your practice to work fewer hours, pay off your loans or take more dream vacations.  Besides the academic instruction and assistance in its real-life applications, you learn how to integrate these cutting-edge methods into your new or existing practice.

Module 2: Assessment and Treatment of Digestion, Absorption, Mucosal Integrity, and Gastrointestinal Dysfunction

In this module you'll explore the structures of the digestive tract and how it evolved to function. You will see how the health of the gut is so incredibly important for the overall health of the body.

Physiology of the GI: You'll examine the various sections of the gut and the role they play in digestion, absorption, utilization, and excretion. You'll spend time looking at the latest research on the role the gut plays in immune regulation, the mucosal barrier and discuss the concept of the gut as a "second brain".

Dysfunctions of the GI: You'll look at how the GI becomes imbalanced and the effects this has on human physiology. You will become very familiar with the major dysfunctions of the GI: acid reflux, abdominal pain, heartburn, indigestion, diarrhea, constipation, etc..

Assessing the GI Tract: In these sections you will be introduced to the concept of Primary Functional Diagnostic Medicine (FDM) Testing and how this can be used to assess the GI health of your patients. You'll learn the complex interactions between the GI and other systems of the body and be introduced to powerful Advanced FDM testing to uncover the true cause of GI problems.

These tests will include the Digestive Stool Analysis, Stool Pathogen/Dysbiosis testing (dysbiosis, candida and parasites), Intestinal Permeability Studies, Mucosal Barrier Test, and Organic Acid Analysis.

Clinical Application: You'll be presented with treatment protocols based on the assessments you will be performing in your clinic. Treatments will focus on reducing inflammation, healing gut irritation and permeability, restoring microflora, optimizing absorption, and modulating the immune reaction.

Module 3 - The Immune System

Physiology of the Immune System: In this module you will examine the normal physiology of the immune response and look at factors that can cause allergies and auto-immunity and the emergence of chronic disease.

Triggers for Immune Imbalance: In this section we'll be examining the many predisposing factors of the immune system including the role played by nutrient deficiencies, hyperpermeability of the gut, and pharmaceutical drugs. We'll also take a look at the role the immune system plays in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and other viral disorders.

Assessing the Underlying Cause of Immune Imbalance: We'll be paying particular attention to the first and second line tests that can help us assess the many different manifestations of immune imbalances: the role of GI mucosa, nutritional deficiencies, liver toxicity and the Gut Associated Lymphatic Tissue. Special attention will be placed on allergy testing, assessing viral load and the Modified Food Elimination and Reintroduction process.

Clinical Application: Treatment will be focusing on ways to treat immune imbalances without shutting down symptoms. Treatment will focus on restoring function to the body and will not be limited to nutritional intervention, diet, exercise, and lifestyle modification.

Module 4 - Energy Production, Oxidative Stress and Mitochondrial Dysfunction

Physiology and Biochemistry of Energy Production: This module will focus on understanding how the body evolved to metabolize glucose, fats, and proteins to produce energy and understanding the consequences of dysregulation in this system. You will get an insight into the causes of the growing diabetes and obesity epidemic. We'll look at the inter-relationship between the liver, the pancreas, and the adrenal glands in the regulation of biochemical energy.

Assessing the Underlying Cause of Blood Sugar Dysregulation and the Problems of Insulin Dysregulation and Oxidative Stress: The early assessment of blood sugar dysregulation is essential for the prevention of diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease. We'll be looking at the best ways to do this using symptom analysis, blood chemistry analysis, and advanced functional diagnostic labs. We'll also discuss ways to assess for oxidative stress to prevent the end organ damage caused by uncontrolled blood sugar levels and other dysfunctions associated with oxidative stress.

Clinical Application: Treatment will focus on the prevention of blood sugar dysregulation and the damage caused by oxidative stress.

Module 5 - Inflammation

Physiology of the Inflammatory Process:
In this module we'll be looking at the normal physiology of the inflammatory response and look at factors that can cause the premature triggering of the inflammatory cascade. Special attention will be placed on Essential Fatty Acid metabolism and the Cytokine Cascade.

Predisposing Factors for Inflammation: In this section we'll be examining the many predisposing factors of the inflammatory process, including the role played by nutrient deficiencies, hyperpermeability of the gut, allergies, and pharmaceutical drugs. We'll also take a look at the role inflammation plays in cardiovascular disease and auto-immune conditions.

Assessing the Underlying Cause of Inflammation: We'll be paying particular attention to the first and second line tests that can help us assess the many different manifestations of inflammatory imbalances. Special attention will be placed on Essential Fatty Acid Analysis and Cytokine Testing.

Clinical Application: Treatment will be focusing on ways to treat inflammatory conditions without just focusing attention on shutting down the inflammatory symptoms. Treatment will focus on restoring function to the body, treating the underlying cause and will not be limited to nutritional intervention, diet, exercise, and lifestyle modification.

Module 6 - Detoxification and the Liver

Physiology and Biochemistry of the liver: In this section you will look at the role the liver plays in detoxifying the toxins your patients are exposed to in their environment. You will learn the 2 phases of liver detoxification and be able to relate problems in either of these areas to symptoms and dysfunctions commonly seen in your practice. You'll also learn the role the intestines play in the detoxification and elimination of toxins.

Assessing the Liver's Detoxification Capacity: Using Primary FDM tests you will have the opportunity to assess an individual patient's detoxification ability and toxic burden. You will also learn how to interpret a number of essential Advanced FDM tests including the Liver Detoxification profile and RBC mineral testing. You will also be taught the best methods of evaluating the presence of toxic elements such as heavy metals.

Clinical Application: Treatment of liver detoxification problems will center around removing the source of the exposure, reducing the toxins in the body, and strengthening the body with appropriate supportive nutrients.

Module 7 - NeuroEndocrine Regulation: The Adrenals, The Thyroid and Sex Hormone Regulation

Understanding the physiology of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal-thyroid-sex hormone axis: We will focus attention on individual hormonal systems giving particular attention to adrenal, thyroid, male and female sex hormone regulation. We'll look at the many ways these systems become dysfunctional and examine the impact this has on human physiology.

Functional Assessment and Treatment: We will look at the most effective ways to assess for hormonal dysregulation in all of the main Neuroendocrine systems. You will learn the major primary FDM testing techniques using signs and symptoms analysis, in-office lab tests, functional PE techniques and of course the latest techniques for thoroughly analyzing blood chemistries for hormonal imbalances. We will devote plenty of time to understanding the thyroid panel on a blood test. You will leave with a thorough understanding of the different interpretations that can be made from the tests on a thyroid panel and how they alter clinical treatment.

Advanced FDM Testing: You will learn how to interpret the Adrenal Stress Index test and be familiar with all of the various treatment methods that can be employed to restore adrenal function. You will also become experts in analyzing female and male sex hormone profiles so you can easily manage patients with sex hormone dysregulation.
